How Do Dermal Fillers Work?
Dermal fillers are substances engineered to be injected beneath the skin’s surface to add volume and fullness. They are sometimes called soft tissue fillers. There are many different substances used in dermal fillers, each designed to treat specific signs of aging or other facial cosmetic issues. Some fillers add plumpness, some trigger the skin to make more of its own collagen and some are semi-permanent fillers.
Dermal fillers are minimally invasive, convenient and long-lasting.
What Do Dermal Fillers Treat?
Dermal fillers are designed to treat static wrinkles (wrinkles not caused by muscle movement), including those around the mouth and cheeks. These wrinkles usually develop due to a loss of collagen and elasticity in the skin. Different types of dermal fillers treat different signs of aging. They may:
- Replace lost facial volume, such as shallow areas on the face or thinning lips
- Augment or plump up the cheeks
- Reduce or fill in the nasal labial folds (your “laugh lines” or “smile lines”)
How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?
Timing for the effect to appear and how long they last varies. Certain fillers may last six months, whereas others may last up to two years or even longer. The areas being treated and your individual needs and expectations will be discussed between you and your practitioner to decide which filler is the best choice.
