What Are Facial Injectables?
At The Vein Institute (TVI), we use two types of facial injectables to treat lines and wrinkles in the upper face—Botox and Xeomin. Botox uses a toxin called onabotulinumtoxinA to temporarily prevent the muscles from moving. These muscles are the ones that cause lines and wrinkles to form.
Botox was the first brand-name drug to use the botulinum toxin. Other products are now available and include incobotulinumtoxinA (Xeomin), which is also available at TVI. Each is slightly different, but used to achieve the same purpose.
What Do Facial Injectables Treat?
Botox and Xeomin reduce the “11” frown lines between the eyes, creases in the forehead, and crow’s feet around the eyes, all without any invasive plastic surgery.
Botox and Xeomin injections target the repeated muscle contractions caused by squinting, frowning, smiling and raising the eyebrows. Over the years, these contractions break down the collagen and lines and wrinkles form.
The most common use of these injections is to temporarily relax the facial muscles that cause wrinkles in the forehead and around the eyes. They block the signals from nerves that cause these facial muscles to contract, smoothing out existing lines while preventing further damage to the area.
What Is The Best Age To Start Treatment?
Age does not determine whether Botox or Xeomin injections are right for any person. Each person’s face forms wrinkles at different rates, depth and number. These differences are caused by a combination of factors, including sun damage, heredity, cellular degeneration, collagen reduction, and free radicals in the environment.
A good time to seek treatment is when your lines start to bother you, but the best time to seek treatment is before your lines start bothering you and causing permanent lines. The procedure is performed in our office and takes about 10 minutes. Your practitioner will use a very small needle to inject tiny amounts of Botox or Xeomin into your skin or muscles in the targeted area. The number of injections needed depends on multiple factors, including the extent of the area being treated.
Botox and Xeomin injections give a subtle improvement to the skin that looks natural. You’ll look like yourself—just with fewer lines.
