Radio Frequency

What is Radiofrequency Ablation?

Ablation is a term that describes the use of heat to inflict controlled damage in tissue. In the case of varicose veins, radiofrequency energy is delivered into a vein to cause the vessel to close off.

What Are the Benefits of Radiofrequency Ablation?

Vein treatments are beneficial because they can quickly alleviate the discomfort of dysfunctional veins. Radiofrequency ablation is an appealing treatment option due to benefits that include:

  • Treatment is safe and fast- The average treatment session lasts approximately 40 minutes. No long incisions or general anesthesia are needed for radiofrequency ablation vein treatment.
  • The minimally-invasive procedure involves a tiny incision measuring only about ¼ inch.
  • Recovery is relatively quick for most patients.
  • Patients gain immediate relief from the symptoms of varicose veins.

"I must say i feel better then i ever felt in a long time. i love both of the doctors i had they are great ! i would'nt change them for no one else."

Am I Eligible for Radiofrequency Vein Treatment?

Many people who wish to get rid of problematic varicose veins are good candidates for radiofrequency ablation. The best way to determine if this procedure is suitable for you is to consult with a vein specialist. To determine candidacy, we perform a thorough consultation that involves a medical history review and physical examination of the legs. Pictures of the veins may be taken for the chart.

Lastly, a non-invasive vascular assessment may be performed using ultrasound to visualize the veins in question. Appropriate treatment options are discussed based on the findings of the history and physical, and treatment can be scheduled at the patient's convenience.

How is Radiofrequency Ablation Used to Treat Varicose Veins?

To treat a varicose vein, a vascular specialist may direct radiofrequency energy through a small tube called a catheter. The tiny radiofrequency fiber is easily inserted into the vein through a small incision. It is guided by ultrasound imaging to the appropriate point in the vein that needs closure.

There, uniform and consistent radiofrequency passes through the catheter generates temperatures of approximately 120°C in the vein. Heat causes collagen in the vein walls to contract and collapse inward. The blood re-routes to other vessels and the closed vein gradually disappears.

Do I Need Time to Recover After Radiofrequency Ablation?

It takes very little time to recover from radiofrequency ablation treatment. Most patients return to work the day after their procedure. Patients may notice mild bruising and swelling but should not experience lasting discomfort.

To manage these side effects and promote the redirection of blood to nearby vessels, vein specialists advise patients to wear prescribed compression stockings for approximately one week. During this time, strenuous activity and heavy lifting must be avoided. Within 10 to 14 days after treatment, most normal activities can resume.

Is Radiofrequency Ablation Safe?

Treatment is comfortable. Before beginning the procedure, the provider administers a local anesthetic just beneath the skin. Patients should not feel much of anything during their procedure.

Radiofrequency ablation vein treatment is generally considered safe and effective. The procedure must be performed by a vein specialist to keep potential risks to a minimum. Possible complications of this procedure include:

  • Burns on the skin
  • Nerve damage that results in prolonged pain or tingling after recovery
  • Blood clot formation in the treated vein or another deep vein.
  •
Radiofrequency ablation is safe and successful in approximately 97 out of 100 patients. The risks of nerve damage and blood clots are lower with this procedure than with vein stripping surgery. Furthermore, studies show that radiofrequency ablation achieves results that, after 2 or more years, are comparable to vein surgery.
