Safely reduce the appearance of spider veins.

Sclerotherapy

What Is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a minimally-invasive procedure used for both cosmetic and medical purposes. It can reduce the appearance of spider veins and smaller varicose veins.

What is Cosmetic Sclerotherapy?

Cosmetic sclerotherapy treats spider veins in the legs by using a tiny needle to inject a solution (sclerosant) into a vein just below the skin level. The solution causes the vein to scar, harden and eventually collapse, which forces blood to change routes to healthier veins. The collapsed vein is reabsorbed by the body and disappears.

Benefits of Cosmetic Sclerotherapy

  • Minimal procedural time (20 to 30 minutes)
  • Minimal to no down time – normal activities may resume the same day
  • Only minor discomfort
  • Fading and disappearance of spider veins and symptoms
  • Safe procedure: does not adversely affect blood circulation in any way

What is Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy?

Ultrasound guided sclerotherapy is used to treat deep varicose veins that are symptomatic and not easily seen or reached at the skin’s surface level. Ultrasound is used to “map” out these veins and guide the clinician to the correct spot. The rest of the procedure is the same as in cosmetic sclerotherapy treatments. A small amount of a sclerosant agent gets injected into the targeted vein(s). The vein eventually collapses and is reabsorbed by the body and disappears.

Benefits of Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy

  • Minimal procedural time with only minor discomfort
  • Minimal to no down time
  • Helps to identify the root cause of visible varicose and larger spider veins
  • Improving the appearance and symptoms of varicose veins
  • Safe procedure: does not adversely affect blood circulation in any way

Is Sclerotherapy Painful?

While many people experience no discomfort, a minor stinging or burning sensation may occur at the injected vein. Side effects after the procedure may include bruising around the injection site, and raised, red, darkened areas at the injection site. Larger veins that were treated may become hard, dark and/or lumpy. These veins may require several months to dissolve and fade. Any other side effects should be reported to your physician as soon as possible.

After Treatment

After the procedure, the treated area will have bandages or medical tape applied. Compression socks will also be provided and are recommended for at least seven days after treatment. Patients may resume all normal daily activities after treatment. Additional ultrasounds and follow-up visits may be required to look for other veins that may need treatment or to address areas of discomfort. Following treatment, patients are encouraged to walk regularly to promote proper blood circulation, though strenuous athletic activity should be avoided for a few days.
